Many of us have been dealing with Covid – 19 by staying at home because that is the best way you can be safe. Staying away from home past six years made me understand that one should know to prepare basic food to fill a hungry stomach. During this pandemic situation, I wanted to do something productive. As I said in the introduction I fall under the second category who loves eating more than cooking. But, current situation left me with no other option. Hence, I started cooking, which I stopped due to my busy schedule at my workplace.
So my first recipe which I am excited to share is apple Halwa. It’s a dessert which is very easy to prepare by the beginners. I thought that my first blog should start with something sweet because we Bengalis are fan of sweets.
Things which must be there in your kitchen to prepare this amazing dessert are as follows: Ghee (clarified butter) 2 big apples Sugar and milk. Others like mawa is an optional.
As most shops are closed in and around the city, hence this can be prepared in simple steps to start your day.
Wash the apples and peel them. Chop those apples into pieces and run them into a mixer grinder. People who don’t have an option of mixer grinder, you can use your hands to grate the apples.
In a pan (non-stick pan can be a better option) add one tablespoon of ghee (clarified butter). Heat the ghee on medium flame. As it becomes hot, then add the apples. Cook those apples took the water evaporates and it changes the colour from white to golden brown. This process will take close to 8 to 9 minutes, but it might take longer if you use more amount of apples.
The next step will be adding sugar. Adjust the quantity of sugar depending on how sweet the apples are. Use least amount of sugar if the apples are really sweet.
Mix it with the grated apples along with sugar until it becomes a little dry, then pour milk and elaichi powder. Stir it well every 2 minutes as the sugar melts the halwa will again become liquid. The complete process will take 30 minutes. Then garnish them with dry fruits and serve hot
